  • Material delivery. Pavers, base aggregate, polymeric sand, edge restraint, and any drainage materials are staged on-site.

Day 1: Excavation and Sub-Base Prep

The first day is the loudest and the most disruptive. The crew excavates the patio footprint to the depth required by the base spec — typically 10–12 inches below finished grade for a residential patio over clay soil.

That depth breaks down as:

  • 2.5 inches for pavers and bedding sand
  • 6–8 inches for compacted base aggregate (CA-6 or equivalent crushed limestone)
  • 1–2 inches buffer for subgrade preparation

Once excavated, the subgrade itself — the bottom of the hole — is graded and compacted. In clay soil, this is where geotextile fabric goes down before any aggregate is added. The fabric prevents clay from working its way up into the base aggregate over freeze-thaw cycles, which is what causes long-term settlement.

Day 2: Base Installation and Compaction

Base aggregate goes down in lifts (a lift is one thin layer of aggregate, spread and compacted before the next layer goes on top) — we don't dump 8 inches at once and compact the top layer. Each lift is 2–3 inches deep, watered lightly to settle, then compacted with a plate compactor across the entire surface. Repeat until you've built up the full 6–8 inch base.

Day 3: Edge Restraint and Bedding Sand

Edge restraint goes in around the entire perimeter. Options:

  • Plastic restraint (most common) — spike-anchored
  • Aluminum or steel restraint — longer-lasting, spike-anchored, slightly more expensive
  • Concrete bond beam — highest cost, used for patios with significant load (driveways, RV pads) or where heavy edge stress is expected

After edge restraint, a 1-inch layer of coarse bedding sand is screeded to a uniform thickness. The bedding sand is what allows for final paver leveling — it's not structural, just a setting bed.

Day 3–4: Paver Placement

Pavers are placed in the chosen pattern, starting from a string-line reference and working outward. Cuts at the perimeter are made with a wet saw to fit the layout exactly. Quality matters here — a good crew makes clean cuts and uses cut pieces to fill in patterns rather than leaving awkward gaps.

Day 4–5: Sand Sweep, Compaction, and Polymeric Activation

Once all pavers are placed:

  1. Joint filling. Polymeric sand is swept into every joint between pavers. Polymeric sand contains a binding agent that activates with water — once activated, the joints lock together and resist weed growth, ant penetration, and wash-out from rain.
  2. Final compaction. A plate compactor with a protective rubber mat runs across the entire patio surface to set the pavers fully into the bedding sand and consolidate the polymeric sand.
  3. Activation watering. The polymeric sand is misted with water in sequence — not a heavy spray, which would wash it out — to activate the binder. This is timed carefully and usually done at the end of the day to avoid foot traffic during cure.

Day 5–7: Cure and Sealing

The polymeric sand needs 24 hours of dry cure before foot traffic and 48–72 hours before furniture or grills.

Sealing is the optional final step. A quality paver sealer (penetrating or film-forming) does two things: locks down the polymeric sand against wash-out and slows UV color fade. We include initial sealing in every paver install. Reseal every 3–5 years for ongoing protection.

Drainage Built Into the Install

Most patio failures in northern Illinois trace back to drainage — not paver quality, not crew skill. Water that wasn't accounted for during the install becomes the problem that ruins the patio years later.

Proper drainage handling during install:
