Common Questions

Find answers to common questions about our landscaping services and process.

What is trench edging, and why do you offer it instead of plastic or metal?

Trench edging is a clean, V-shaped cut made along the border between lawn and bed — typically a vertical cut about three inches deep on the lawn side and a 45-degree slope on the bed side. It creates a crisp, organic line with no exposed material. Plastic and metal edging shift, crack, or pop up with freeze-thaw cycles in our climate, look industrial, and are unforgiving when you change a bed shape. A clean trench edge always looks intentional and is infinitely adjustable.

How often does a trench edge need to be re-cut?

Plan on one full re-cut per year, typically as part of spring cleanup, with optional light touch-ups in midsummer if turfgrass starts creeping back into beds. Lawn and bed lines naturally blur over a growing season as grass roots migrate sideways and soil settles into the trench. An annual refresh keeps the line razor-sharp. We include re-cutting in our seasonal maintenance packages so it stays on the calendar.

Does trench edging actually keep grass and weeds out of my beds?

It significantly slows the migration but does not seal it forever — which is true of every edging material, including steel and brick. The vertical cut interrupts the horizontal root paths that turfgrass and aggressive groundcovers use to invade beds, and the depth gives you a clear visual and mechanical boundary when weeding. Paired with proper mulch depth, a freshly cut trench edge keeps beds tidy through the season with far less maintenance than people expect.

Can you re-edge an existing landscape, or is this only for new installs?

We re-edge existing landscapes regularly. It is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost upgrades you can make to a tired-looking yard. A clean re-cut combined with fresh mulch instantly resets the look of beds you have had for years. We can also reshape bed lines while we are at it — softening curves, expanding planting areas, or tightening up overgrown shapes — without committing to a full landscape redesign.
