Common Questions

Find answers to common questions about our landscaping services and process.

What kinds of water features do you build?

We design and install ecosystem ponds, koi ponds, pondless waterfalls, bubbling rock and urn fountains, and stream features that wind through planted beds. Pondless waterfalls give you the sound and movement of moving water without the depth, fish, or open-water maintenance — a popular choice for families with young children. Full ponds are better when you want fish, lily pads, and a stocked aquatic ecosystem. We help you pick the right format during the design phase.

How much does a backyard water feature cost?

National data shows backyard ponds typically run $3,000 to $15,000, with most homeowners landing between $3,680 and $14,500. Small garden ponds start near $2,500, mid-sized koi ponds run $8,500 to $14,500, and large recreational ponds can exceed $20,000. Pondless waterfalls generally begin around $5,000. Cost drivers include excavation volume, liner and rock selection, pump and filtration sizing, lighting, and any electrical or plumbing runs. We quote each feature individually after walking the site.

How deep does a koi pond need to be in northern Illinois?

For koi to overwinter safely outdoors here, plan on a minimum depth of three to four feet across at least a portion of the pond. That depth keeps water below the frost zone and gives fish a warmer thermal layer to sit in once the surface ices. We pair depth with a properly sized aerator or de-icer to keep a hole open in the ice for gas exchange — sealing a pond under solid ice is what kills fish, not the cold itself.

What does pond maintenance look like through the year?

Spring: a full cleanout, pump and filter restart, water-quality check, and trim of overwintered plants. Summer: routine skimmer cleaning, water top-ups, plant care, and feeding adjustments. Fall: leaf netting, trimming back aquatic plants, and a final cleanout before water cools. Winter: switch to a de-icer and aerator, stop feeding once water drops below 50°F, and never break ice by force. We offer seasonal service packages so you do not have to track this calendar yourself.

Will a pond attract mosquitoes, frogs, or other wildlife?

Moving water does not breed mosquitoes — they need still water to lay eggs, so a properly circulated pond actually reduces mosquito activity compared to a forgotten birdbath. You will likely attract dragonflies, songbirds, and the occasional frog or toad, all of which are net positives for the yard. Herons can be a real concern for koi; we plan depth, plant cover, and optional deterrents during design if predators are a known issue in your neighborhood.

Can you add a water feature to an existing patio or landscape?

Yes, and it is one of our most rewarding retrofits. Pondless waterfalls and bubbling rock features are especially well-suited to existing landscapes because they need a smaller footprint and minimal excavation. For larger ponds, we plan access carefully to protect your lawn, beds, and hardscapes during the build. A 3D rendering of the proposed feature in the context of your current yard is part of our standard design process.

How long does a water feature installation take?

Most small to mid-sized features are installed in two to four days of active work. Larger koi ponds or stream systems with significant excavation and rock work can run a week or more. Timeline depends on size, site access, electrical and plumbing tie-ins, and the rock selection process. We schedule installs spring through fall in northern Illinois — once temperatures drop and the ground starts freezing, we shift water feature work to the following season.
