Why Every Beautiful Landscape Starts With Mulch

Mulch is one of the simplest, most effective ways to boost the health and appearance of your landscape. Beyond its rich, natural look, mulch acts as a protective barrier shielding roots from extreme temperatures, locking in moisture, and suppressing weeds.

Moisture Retention

Mulch helps soil stay cool and moist, reducing the need for frequent watering and ensuring consistent hydration for your plants.

Weed Suppression

A thick layer of mulch blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, naturally minimizing weed growth without harsh chemicals.

Soil Enrichment

As organic mulch breaks down, it adds vital nutrients to your soil while also protecting plant roots from erosion, compaction, and temperature extremes.

Common Questions

Find answers to common questions about our landscaping services and process.

How deep should mulch be applied?

Two to three inches is the sweet spot, with three inches generally considered ideal in our climate. Less than two inches and you lose the weed suppression and moisture retention benefits. More than three and you risk suffocating roots, encouraging fungal issues, and creating a hospitable home for voles. We refresh mulch to the proper depth rather than simply piling new mulch on top of old — the "mulch volcano" look around trees is both unattractive and bad for the tree.

When should mulch be installed in northern Illinois?

Spring mulching is best done after the ground has thawed and dried enough to work in beds — typically mid- to late April through May in our market. Mulching too early can lock cold and moisture into beds and slow perennial emergence. A second light refresh in fall can help insulate roots and keep beds looking sharp through winter. We coordinate mulch timing with spring cleanup and bed edging so the whole landscape resets together.

How much does professional mulch installation cost?

Industry-standard installed pricing runs roughly $70 to $150 per cubic yard, with materials alone running $35 to $170 per yard depending on type (hardwood, dyed, premium bark, etc.). One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at the recommended three-inch depth. We quote by bed square footage rather than yardage so you see what is actually covered, and we walk the property with you so we can recommend the mulch type that fits your beds and your aesthetic.
