Common Questions

Find answers to common questions about our landscaping services and process.

How much does a residential sprinkler system cost in our area?

A typical 3- to 5-zone residential sprinkler install in the Chicago suburbs runs $2,100 to $4,700, or roughly $700 to $900 per zone. Larger lots, smart controllers, drip zones for beds, and clay-soil trenching can push that toward $6,000 to $8,000 or more. Chicagoland trenching costs sit on the higher side because frost-depth requirements protect pipes from winter damage. We size and quote each system to your actual lot, not by lot square footage alone.

Drip irrigation, traditional sprinklers, or both?

For most properties, the answer is both. Traditional pop-up sprinklers are the right tool for open lawn areas. Drip irrigation is far more efficient for planting beds, vegetable gardens, container groupings, and odd-shaped zones — it exceeds 90% efficiency versus 50 to 70% for sprinklers and keeps water at the soil level where roots actually use it. We typically design systems with sprinkler zones for turf and drip zones for beds on separate programs.

What does landscape lighting do for a property?

Landscape lighting extends your usable hours outdoors, dramatically improves curb appeal at night, and adds real safety on steps, walkways, and dark side yards. We design with low-voltage LED systems — they run on 12 volts instead of 120, draw minimal power (a typical 10-fixture residential setup costs under $5 a month to run), and quality LEDs last 10 to 15 years. Lighting is also one of the highest-impact, lowest-disruption upgrades for an existing landscape.

Do I need to winterize my sprinkler system in Illinois?

Yes — every fall, without exception. Northern Illinois ground frost reaches well below typical sprinkler line depths, and any water left in the system will freeze, expand, and crack pipes, valves, or backflow preventers. Repairs after a frozen blowout almost always cost more than annual winterization. We blow systems out with compressed air in late October or November before sustained freezing temperatures arrive and restart them in spring once the ground thaws.

Can a smart controller actually save money?

Yes, and the EPA-rated WaterSense models can cut outdoor water use significantly. A smart controller uses local weather data, soil-moisture inputs, and zone-by-zone settings to skip watering when it has rained, water less in cooler weeks, and water more in heat waves — without you touching the panel. The upfront cost is modest, the rebate is sometimes available through local water utilities, and most homeowners see the payback within a few seasons.
